hockey. students in newtown, they are back in school today. but to be clear, not the students of sandy hook elementary school. students at other schools, they are seeing more police, more counselors on hand, just being in town the last couple of days there are a lot of police officers just sitting in the driveways of a lot of the schools here, clearly security being beefed up in this town right now. teachers union says classes will discuss the shooting in age appropriate manner. it is not clear yet, though, when sandy hook elementary school will resume class. but when they do, it will certainly be at a different school in the neighboring town of monroe. and i just got back from newtown this morning, and during dinner time last night, i was invited to spend some time with these two volunteer firefighters, they're with newtown hook and ladder and they went into emergency mode, of course, early last friday morning. they are rob mana and ray corbo. they served their community now for more than 20 years each. but the day they got that call, they say it was like nothing they had ever seen be
stores chainwide. >>> grief counselors will be on hand this morning. sandy hook elementary school remains closed. jessica rekos will be laid to rest today. she couldn't wait until her 10th birthday to get a horse. she adored them. >>> another big story out of washington where there's been huge movement in the fiscal cliff wrangling with 14 days left to go before huge across-the-board tax hikes. overnight we learned that president obama made an eye-opening new offer in talks with house speaker john boehner. under this new proposal, tax rates would go up on incomes above $400,000. for years the president has campaigned that that number should start at $250,000. he's also offering some new spending cuts to go along with this. speaker boehner's latest proposal called for the tax hikes to kick in at $1 million. cnn's dan lothian is in washington with the latest on this. dan, it really does look like there is some movement. >> it does. this movement came during a meeting the president had with speaker john boehner yesterday at the white house. that meeting lasted for 45 minutes. it was the thir
the children killed in the massacre at the sandy hook elementary school right down the road from where we are right now. we're watching all of this unfold, and the pain is clearly, clearly evident. while every day here in new town is sad, today, it's especially, it's especially sad. this afternoon, the first funerals were held for victims of the elementary school massacre. connecticut's governor, you just saw him here, he attended one of the services today, and he summed it up this way, and i'm quoting him, you see little coffins and your heart starts to ache. as this town and the nation tries to come to grips with this huge, huge tragedy, the investigation is focusing in on the question why. some of the answers may come from a computer found in the home where the gunman, adam lanza, lived with his mother. cnn's national correspondent deborah feyerick is keeping track of the latest developments. she's joining us now live with more. what are you learning, deb? >> wolf, we can tell you law enforcement sources are telling us the computer is being analyzed. it was found smashed inside the hom

responders who were the first people to enter the sandy hook elementary school and discover the carnage there that ended up being the loss of 20 children and six adults in that school and then, of course, the mother of the killer who was shot in her bed and the killer himself. the attorney general apparently is not traveling with any other senior justice officials to newtown. he will also not be attending any of the funerals or the memorials. and again, you will not be seeing the pictures of him. there's no plan for this to be anything public other than these meetings he's going to have with those law enforcement officials. but, of course, this is a day of more farewells in newtown. six, six funerals in this tiny community, six visitations also. so 12 services. these people being laid to rest today, allison wyatt, she is just gorgeous. she loved to draw. and she told her parents she wanted to be an artist. benjamin wheeler, look at that smile. he's just so sweet. huge fan of the beatles. his parents tell us. and then look at this. catherine hubbard, you almost know her personality from

first responders at sandy hook and columbine were the teachers themselves. they put their lives in front of these bullets and in front of the shooters. let's not disarm these folks. we are certainly not training them to roam the hall ways looking for the shooter. we want to institute this conceal carry option in line with the district policies or school policies for the lockdown. when the lockdown fails, when the shooter gets into the classroom, the teacher doesn't need to do a lot of tactical training to access and engage a firearm pointed at the shooter that is to ten feet away and press the trigger. alleviating the option of jumping in front of the kids to soak up the bullet. >> cara costello talked with david keene about the move to arm teachers. here's what he had to say. >> 23,000 schools today that have armed guards. private schools and public schools. cops in the school program was initiated in the 1990s by bill clinton. whether an individual school wants that protection or doesn't want that protection is really up to the individual school and when we made that statement, whether
week after the slaughter at sandy hook, 90 minutes after the nation paused in silence on the victims, the national rifle association preparing right now to break its silence. live picture now from washington. that's where they're going to speak. wayne lapierre is going to speak, the head of the nra. we got a warning two minutes ago that it would be two minutes. we're waiting for him to show up. the nra is america's premiere gun rights lobby. it may be facing its biggest challenge in years as many americans shocked, they were shocked by newtown and they're calling for tougher restrictions on guns and ammunition, and while we wait for the group's executive director to appear, wayne lapierre, i want to bring in several of my colleagues now. first off, wolf blitzer is here, jessica yellin is at the white house, dana bash on capitol hill, and jeffrey toobin is in new york for us. as we wait, wolf, let's start with you. is this, in fact, a turning point for guns in america? do you think we'll hear anything like that in this press conference? >> i know a lot of attitudes have hardened as a

americans are starting to change their minds about guns. the sandy hook school shooting is apparently having an effect. cnn political editor paul steinhauser looks at the data. paul? >> reporter: hey, miguel t appears the tragedy of newtown, connecticut, may be making an impact on public opinion on gun control in a way other mass shootings the past years have not. here is one reason y more people told us they were angry, shocked and fearful following the horrific sandy hook elementary school shootings than hose who felt the same way in january 2011 after a mass shooting in tucson, arizona that left six people dead and some, including then-congresswoman gabby giffords, severely injured. 46% of people questioned in our cnn/orc national poll said that government and society can take action to prevent future gun violence. that's up 13 points from the arizona shootings. >> over these past five days, a discussion has re-emerged as to what we might do, not only so deter mass shootings in the future but to reduce the epidemic of gun violence that plagues this country every single day. >> that was th
there, and economists have thought that hurricane sandy would have an adverse affect, and it hurt some, but there's so much going on that the economy -- >> is it possible we haven't seen the full impact of hurricane sandy, that we still might see some of those jobs lost, and it just hasn't been the numbers have not caught up to it yet to the reality? >> absolutely right. we do have to wait another month to get the full picture of it, but it was interesting that we saw initial claims for unemployment compensation initially spiked up right after sandy, and then they began to go down, and so i suspect next month there will be some effect. >> how strong is this job growth? does this really get us out of the recession conditions for so long? >> interesting question. it has the potential to do that, because think of this. we've had sandy, and we have all of this debate going on over the fiscal cliff, that's driving us all crazy, right? >> yes, it is. >> and what it's also doing is that it has gotten the corporate seblgtor in a position where they're not vin investing. they're waiting to see
to that? there was a bill introduced by the ways and means committee in the house, sandy levin that called for this legislation. the speaker was going to bring it up to kill it but he kobt kill it and then we moved to plan b, the debacle of all debacles. it's the mother of all debacles. that was brought up in an effort to send us something. he couldn't even pass it among the republicans it was so absurd. he meaning the speaker. so it's very clear now, mr. president, that the speaker's number one goal is to get elected speaker on january 3rd. the house is not even here. he's told me he'll give them two days to get back here, 48 hours, not two days, 48 hours. they don't even have enough of the leadership here to meet to talk about it. they've done it with conference calls. people are spread all over this country because the speaker is basically waiting for january 3rd. now, the president campaigned on raising taxes on people making more than $250 thou,000 a year. the bush tax cut will expire at the end of this year. obama was elected with a surplus of about three million votes. he won the el
